Carrboro Presents Annual Holiday Program for 2020

The Town of Carrboro is excited to present our Annual Holiday Program for 2020!

Each year, the Town welcomes the community to gather in front of Town Hall for the lighting of the holiday tree along with remarks from our elected officials and songs from our local school children.  Due to the current public health situation, the event will be presented in a virtual format.

We welcome everyone to view the program at https://bit.ly/3a4deaQ to enjoy a series of video messages, poetry, stories and songs to celebrate the official start of the holiday season here in Carrboro!

For 2020, we are pleased to welcome again our elected officials with special messages for the community.  We are also excited to share a special virtual rendition of ‘Winter Wonderland’ as sung by a combined choir from Carrboro Elementary, Frank Porter Graham Elementary, and McDougle Elementary schools.

There will be more holiday-related music with members of the Find Your Own Voices group, who are made up of local musicians and singers who meet regularly to join in song.  This year’s event will also feature a couple of holiday-themed poems read by Susan Spalt of the Carrboro Poets Council.  Town of Carrboro staff members will share messages including our own Chief Walter Horton who will read “Twas the Night Before Christmas.” Look for a special message from "I am Soteria," a local business owner, poet, activist and motivational speaker. Enjoy a flashback to memories and scenes from the 2019 Holiday Parade down Main Street in Carrboro.

All videos will remain accessible for residents to enjoy at their leisure throughout the holiday season.

We hope that everyone will enjoy the program, and we look forward to being able to gather together again in the future!

COVID Vaccine

Orange County Plans for Phased, Equitable Distribution of COVID-19 Vaccine

When a COVID vaccine is available for the general public, the Orange County Health Department has a plan to ensure the vaccine is distributed equitably and efficiently to county residents.

To help determine who should get the vaccine first, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine convened an independent COVID Vaccine Advisory Committee. The prioritization plan is based on the committee’s guidance along with guidance from the National Academy of Medicine on equitable distribution of vaccine.

Initial phases will concentrate on the most vulnerable populations, including long-term care facilities, first responders, healthcare workers and others involved in treating COVID patients or administering the vaccine. Vaccines could be approved and administered as early as mid- December for the initial phase.

“A tested, safe and effective vaccine will be available to all who want it, but supplies will be limited at first,” said Orange County Health Director Quintana Stewart. “Although the vaccines were developed quickly, they were built upon years of work in developing vaccines for similar viruses.”

Ron StuttsFriday is Ron Stutts Day in Carrboro

In honor of WCHL Radio Host Ron Stutts’ last day on the air before his retirement, Mayor Lydia Lavelle has proclaimed Friday, Dec. 18, as “Ron Stutts Day” in the Town of Carrboro.

While on the air, whenever noting the temperature outside, Ron would always say that the temperature was “a degree cooler” in Carrboro. Mayor Lavelle says that wherever Ron Stutts is, in her opinion, that place “is a degree cooler.”

“I urge all Carrboro residents to join me in thanking Ron for his years of service, and to send him good wishes for his well-earned retirement,” Mayor Lavelle said.

During his 43 years at WCHL, also known as Chapelboro, Ron also hosted community events too numerous to count, many of which took place in Carrboro; for example, Ron was the emcee of many Fourth of July celebrations at Carrboro Town Commons.

Congratulations, Ron!
