On exhibit now at the Carrboro Century Center is artist Denise Allen's photographic project entitled "My Son Matters," featuring portraits of black mothers with their sons. The exhibit will be on display through March. Come by and meet the artist during the 2nd Friday Art Walk on Friday, February 14th from 6:00pm-9:00pm.
“My Son Matters!” is a photography exhibit which consist of portraits of African American parents and their sons accompanied by written declarations. This exhibit elevates and honors the relationship between African American parents and their sons while shining a loving light on the young men whose existence is often stigmatized. Not only does this exhibit documents the concerns and struggles people of color go through to raise their sons, but it gives these engaged parents a platform to re-envision their sons' images: images that have been and continue to be portrayed as negative and demeaning.
