Members
The Greenways Commission is composed of 6 members appointed by the Board of Aldermen plus one or two Board members. Staff support is provided by the Planning and Recreation and Parks Departments. Staff representation (non-voting) is also requested from OWASA, Chapel Hill, UNC, and Orange County to maximize coordination of greenway planning and construction.
Duties & Responsibilities
The commission is charged with recommending to the Board of Aldermen policies, programs, and actions that may assist the Town in safeguarding the water quality, environment and livability of the community by establishing greenways. For purposes of this section, the term “greenways” refers to unbroken chains of preserved open space surrounding stream and wildlife corridors, headwaters, water recharge areas, and significant ecosystems that also provide bicycle and pedestrian connections between neighborhoods and for the community. The commission may also encourage effective stewardship and management of such greenways and promote educational, recreational, and public health usage consistent with the protection of this resource.
Additional information on greenway planning and related topics can be found on transportation and environmental pages.
From Vision 2020
1.11 The Town should encourage and support the development of greenways and parklands dedicated to public use along streams and easements. There should be a network of connected greenways throughout the town. These greenways should serve as nature trails, biking and walking trails, wildlife corridors. All should protect our natural environment.
1.14 The Town should practice and encourage ecologically sound and sustainable maintenance of open space, including parks and greenways.
4.31 The Town should fully implement its bicycle and pedestrian network plan. This plan should identify links needed now as well as links that will be needed by 2020.
4.32 The Town should establish connections with bicycle and pedestrian ways in other jurisdictions.
5.31 Carrboro should work to preserve open space and greenways through all available means, such as direct purchase, conservation easements, donations, and federal and state grants.
5.32 The Town should map a connected series of greenways that are large enough to serve as wildlife corridors.
