Freight Train Blues: Amythyst Kiah Tonight!

The Town of Carrboro is pleased to continue the Freight Train Blues virtual concert series at 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 21, featuring Amythyst Kiah. 

 With an unforgettable voice that’s both unfettered and exquisitely controlled, Tennessee-bred singer/songwriter Amythyst Kiah is redefining the limits of roots music. Growing up a Black and LGBTQ+ woman in the Bible Belt, she experienced social anxiety, grief, alienation – and ultimately, the hard-won triumph of total self-acceptance. Kiah’s debut for Rounder Records, the standout track “Black Myself,” was originally recorded with Our Native Daughters. It earned a 2020 GRAMMY Award nomination for Best American Roots Song and won Song of the Year at the 2019 Folk Alliance International Awards. Kiah’s new version of “Black Myself ” — radically reimagined with the help of producer Tony Berg (Phoebe Bridgers, Amos Lee, Andrew Bird) — represents a stunning expansion of her sound into the world of iconoclastic alternative rock. BIPOC Business Roundtable Discussion

CARRBORO, N.C. -- The Carrboro Department of Economic Development has announced a BIPOC Business Roundtable Discussion scheduled for 4 p.m. Thursday, May 27.

The Town of Carrboro seeks to hear the needs and challenges of Black, Indigenous, Latinx and People of Color businesses in Carrboro, and the role the Town needs to play to help businesses start and grow. Additionally, the roundtable discussions serve as an opportunity for BIPOC Business Owners to get to know and support each other.

The meeting expands upon the Town’s efforts over the past year and a half to listen to the needs of its BIPOC populations and find ways to systemically improve their lives from the Town’s perspective. The Town held three previous Minority Business Roundtables in July 2020, November 2020, and a previous BIPOC Business Roundtable Discussion in February 2021.

Carrboro Jaguars Men's Tennis Day

Today (Wednesday, May 19) is Carrboro Jaguars Men’s Tennis Day, proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle. 

The Carrboro High School Jaguars won the NCHSAA 2-A Team Tennis Championship at Cary Tennis Park on Saturday, May 15, 2021. They are the 2021 State Champions!

“I and urge all residents of the Town of Carrboro to take every opportunity to congratulate these players and their coaches for their remarkable achievement,” Mayor Lavelle said. 

The Carrboro High School Jaguars Tennis Team is coached by Head Coach Jeff Arthurs and Assistant Coach Brennan Nicol. The members of this outstanding Carrboro tennis team are Caian Pickles, Aidan Chung, Tyler Herndon, Wesley Hanes, Jonas Miyagawa, Francisco Bonenberger, Callan Baruch, Tristan Reid, Connor Nicol, Joseph Lee, Johnathan Baddour, Basile Fages, Jaden Mealey and Alexander Vaziri.

Carrboro Pays Tribute to Public Works Employees

It’s Public Works Week in Carrboro, as proclaimed by Mayor Lydia Lavelle. 

“Despite the unprecedented challenges imposed by the COVID-19 pandemic, our public works professionals continue to perform the myriad essential services that allow our Town to function,” Mayor Lavelle said. “I urge all citizens to pay tribute to our public works employees and to recognize the vital contributions they make to protecting our health, safety, and quality of life.”

These infrastructure, facilities, and services could not be provided without the dedicated efforts of all public works employees, who are responsible for planning, improving, and protecting our Town’s vehicles, transportation system, stormwater management system, construction projects, solid waste system, public buildings, parks, greenways, cemeteries, and other structures and facilities essential for our citizens, Mayor Lavelle said. 

2021 marks the 61st annual National Public Works Week sponsored by the American Public Works Association and the Canadian Public Works Association. The theme of this year’s Public Works Week is “Stronger Together.”

Celebrate Black Community and Culture at the Inaugural Juneteenth Festival

A coalition of local organizations invites the community to be a part of the first annual Chapel Hill-Carrboro Juneteenth Celebration. Planning partners include the Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Office of Equity and Inclusion, the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP, the Marion Cheek Jackson Center for Saving and Making History, and many others. The event will celebrate Black community and culture through arts performances, history exhibits, kids activities, and more. 

Juneteenth, also known as Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. The Towns of Chapel Hill and Carrboro proclaimed the observance and commemoration of Juneteenth on June 19, 2020 and encouraged residents and employers to recognize the holiday. Dawna Jones, President of the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP, is excited to partner in the community celebration saying “We look forward to more recognition of Black history, the struggle for equality, and the legacy of leadership Black people have contributed to both Towns. This community celebration will be a great opportunity to do just that, and we are happy to be a part of it."

This year’s event will be mostly virtual, with a limited number of in-person and hybrid offerings.

Call for Applicants: Safe Routes to School Committee

The Town of Carrboro is looking for four applicants to serve on its Safe Routes to School Committee. The following seats need to be filled:

• Two (2) students of either an elementary or middle school (from different schools) located in Carrboro
• One (1) parent of an elementary or middle school student attending school in Carrboro
• One (1) administrator, faculty, or staff working at an elementary or middle school in Carrboro.

Applicants are accepted on a rolling basis and appointments will be made by the Town Council.
